The handpan is often called a mystical or cosmic instrument—but its roots are surprisingly down-to-earth. This article takes you on a journey through time, from the steel pans of Trinidad to the birth of the Hang® and the global handpan movement that followed.
It all began in the Caribbean, in Trinidad and Tobago, during the early 20th century. Musicians started experimenting with metal oil drums to create percussive instruments that produced melodic tones.
These became known as steel pans—the first tuned percussion instruments made from metal. The steel pan’s invention changed the world of music forever and laid the foundation for the handpan.
In the year 2000, Swiss instrument makers Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer from PANArt introduced the Hang®, a revolutionary new instrument inspired by the steel pan, gongs, and the Ghatam (a South Indian clay drum).
The Hang® featured two steel shells glued together to create a UFO-like shape. It combined percussive and melodic tones, playable with the hands, and was tuned in a specific scale. The world had never seen or heard anything like it.
But PANArt kept the Hang® extremely exclusive—handmade in small batches, not available for commercial mass production.
Due to high demand and limited availability of the Hang®, other artisans around the world began developing similar instruments—this was the birth of the handpan.
The term “handpan” was coined by the community to describe instruments inspired by the Hang®, but made by different makers using similar techniques.
Since then, the handpan has evolved into a global movement, with makers in every continent and players from all walks of life.
• Accessible & intuitive – No formal music training required
• Portable – Light and easy to carry
• Healing & meditative – Loved by yoga instructors, therapists, and healers
• Unique sound – Ethereal, rich, and deeply emotional
The handpan appeals to everyone—from street performers and professional musicians to meditation practitioners and sound healers.
Now, over two decades after the first Hang®, the handpan world is more vibrant than ever. Hundreds of makers craft instruments in dozens of scales, materials, and designs.
At Harmony Handpan, we’re proud to be part of this growing tradition, creating high-quality handpans with precision tuning, beautiful resonance, and artistic soul.
The handpan may be a new instrument by historical standards, but its impact is timeless. It brings people together, invites self-expression, and adds beauty to every moment it touches.
